Chocolate Dipped Frozen Banana Pops

It’s safe to say that summer is here in Durham, NC and that leaves all of us at One World Market dreaming up cool treats for hot days. When we aren’t running a quick errand to Ben & Jerry’s for a Fair Trade scoop…or two, we’re trying our hand at easy recipes.

Our friends at Taza Chocolate recently posted a killer recipe for Chocolate Dipped Frozen Banana Pops that had all of us drooling on the computer screen.

Enjoy!

Banana Pops(1)

6 medium bananas, with peels on
2 bars (6 oz.) Taza 60% Dark Stone Ground Chocolate
approximately 1 cup each of 2 or 3 assorted toppings, e.g. chopped nuts, flaked coconut
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
12 popsicle sticks

To Prepare:

1.) Cut unpeeled bananas in half width-wise, and stick on to popsicle sticks (keep the peel on while you do this!)

2.) After cutting and sticking all of the bananas, take off the peels and place bananas on a parchment lined cookie sheet and place in the freezer for about 90 minutes.

3.)While bananas are freezing, prepare toppings as needed. I used roasted salted peanuts (roughly chopped), flaked coconut (toasted lightly in a pan),

4.) Place the prepared toppings on separate shallow plates, then coarsely chop the chocolate and melt it slowly in a heavy-bottomed pot on the stove-top, over low heat, stirring often to avoid clumps and burning.

5.) Line a baking sheet or platter with parchment paper to place the banana pops on after dipping.

6.) Once chocolate is smooth and lump-free, remove it from the heat. Take frozen banana pops out of the freezer and dip, then roll immediately in the topping of your choice! It gets a bit messy, so set them on the parchment-lined baking sheet or platter.

7.) After all bananas have been coated and topped, place them back in the freezer for 30 minutes to for the chocolate coating to harden.

Recipe: End of Summer Season Salad

With Labor Day Weekend only one day away, we’re really starting to feel the end of the summer here at One World Market.

Our amazing teen volunteers who have kept us company all summer long have ventured back to school. Duke students have popped in the store to decorate dorm rooms and apartments.

Yep. It’s official. Summer is nearing a close.

But we’re still holding on! And these temperatures are a nice reminder that the season isn’t officially over…yet.

So we’re heading to the Farmer’s Market and getting in those Durham Bulls Games while we can. We’re meandering over to LocoPops, which we of course balance with delicious salads. Which is how we came across a new favorite:

If you’re heading downtown to the Farmer’s Market, we suggest you pick up the ingredients for this amazing salad:

You can find the RECIPE HERE.

And while you’re at it, serve that beautiful salad in one of our new AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL Acacia Wood Bowls!

Perfect for end of summer salads, autumn harvests, and yes, even holiday candy!

And if you spot a One World Market staffer at the Farmer’s Market – you’ll recognize us in our Sseko sandals, carrying a bolga basket, and buying the ingredients for this salad – be sure to say hello! We can lament the end of summer together!

The Women’s Bean Project– Soup that Transforms Lives

Rainy days call for comfort food, and what’s more comforting than a bowl of delicious soup?

Here at One World Market, we LOVE the soup mixes from Women’s Bean Project, a non-profit organization based in Denver which was created to help at-risk women break the cycle of chronic poverty and unemployment.

Since 1989, Women’s Bean Project has been providing skills training, raising self-confidence, and inspiring hope in place of the demoralizing effects of poverty. At any one time, between 18 and 25 women are in training, learning marketable skills for use in the workplace. Women come with the goal of transforming their lives and moving toward self sufficiency.

The women learn skills that allow them to govern their own lives, empowering them to create better lives for themselves, provide their families with hope, and contribute to a stronger community.

The Women's Bean Project also supports small, local farms, sourcing many of the ingredients for their products from local farmers and vendors.

We really feel like this program is a win-win for everyone! Women are given the skills and support they need to succeed, and we are provided with DELICIOUS soup mixes that are so darn easy to make!

From classic Chili and Black Bean,

Fair Trade Cranberry and Chocolate Scones

What’s better than a warm cup of Fair Trade coffee in the morning? Following up that cup of coffee with a side of Zesty Cranberry and Chocolate Scones!

Perfect for a relaxing weekend breakfast or prepared ahead for a quick grab-and-go option. Make a batch and while you’re at it…bring a batch to One World Market!

You’ll need:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour (all-purpose)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 3/8 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk (preferably whole)
  • 1 cup cold butter, unsalted

For Zesty Cranberry Scones:

  • 1/2 cup dried sweetened cranberries
  • 3/4 Tablespoon orange or lemon zest

For Chocolate Scones:

  • Equal Exchange Organic Panama Extra Dark Chocolate Bar (available at One World Market)

Preheat oven to 375F degrees.

Sift dry ingredients together (in sifter or wire colander).

Beat wet ingredients separately: Cut the butter into the dry ingredients until crumbly. You should still see chunks of butter. (If you don't have a pastry cutter, just use a big fork.)

Stir in the cranberries and zest or chocolate (if splitting dough into two parts to make both cranberry and chocolate scones, do this after adding wet ingredients).

Add wet ingredients to dry just until moist. Don't overmix!

With lightly floured hands on a floured surface, shape into a circle about 1" tall. (The scones will double while baking!) Cut into wedges with a sharp knife. Use a spatula to transfer to a cookie or pizza sheet.

Bake for 20-30 minutes. Watch during the last 5-10 minutes as cooking time may vary according to your oven and also how golden brown you prefer the tops!

You can get creative with this recipe. Change the fruit, add nuts, a splash of wheat germ to the flour. Just keep the butter cold and don't overmix ñ leaving chunks of butter in the dough is what makes it flaky.

Makes 8 super-rich scones.

Another treat we’ve been enjoying here at the store are refreshing glasses of Sparkling Raspberry Iced Rooibos Tea.

It’s so simple to make, and we love the extra zest of freshness from the lime wedges. Plus Rooibos Tea is oh so good for you; it’s super high in antioxidants! Try it – we know you’ll love it too!

TAZA Fair Trade Chocolate Ice Cream

How do you spell humidity in Durham, NC?

S-U-M-M-E-R

Yep. Summer is here, and that means humidity. Here at One World Market, we are pretty positive that there is only one REAL cure for humidity:

taza chocolate ice cream 2

Ice Cream!

We love hitting up Ben and Jerry’s on Broad Street. We love the support that Ben and Jerry’s gives to Fair Trade farmers and growers. All of their ingredients like sugar, vanilla, bananas, and cocoa are sourced through the Fair Trade market. Not to mention it’s just plain delicious!

However, since summer is a…..long season here in Durham, we also like to mix it up by making some frozen treats at home!

We’ve made several batches of this Taza Recipe in our Ice Cream Machine at home:

taza chocolate ice cream

and it is out of this world tasty!

TAZA Chocolate is produced in the Dominican Republic. They partner with La Red Guaconejo, a cooperative of small-scale cacao producers in the northern part of the country, and with an independent organic farm called Hacienda Elvesia, which known for its exceptional fermenting and drying facilities.

All of the chocolate is stone ground, which is a minimal process for chocolate. This gives the chocolate an incredible texture and flavor. TAZA also keeps it simple with additives, keeping the chocolate super pure. This also makes their chocolates naturally gluten free!

Impress your friends and family with this super simple but incredibly delicious Fair Trade ice cream! They’ll think you’re an Ice Cream Pro!

And while you’re at it…bring a scoop or two to One World Market!

Easy Gifts that Keep Giving

This summer, we here at One World Market seem to be getting lots of folks looking for housewarming and hostess gifts.

We love putting together impromptu gift baskets, and thought it would be fun to feature a few of our favorites here on the blog!

photo(17)

Baker’s Delight: Whether it’s a gift for a home cook or a professional chef, anyone who enjoys baking would love this gift! Fair Trade Madagascar Vanilla from Madécasse, paired with cool blue napkins handmade in Bali, a utensil set hand-carved from sustainable acacia wood, all nestled inside an all purpose white-washed bamboo bowl.

Every item tells a story at One World Market, but we love the story behind our new vanilla! Not only does Madécasse support Fair Trade farmers who grow and harvest the vanilla bean, but they also produce and package their product in Madagascar! This provides 4 times the impact of traditional Fair Trade practices.

Tea Lover: The perfect gift for the tea lover in your life! Choose an Organic, Fair Trade tea and pair it with a beautiful handmade, Fair Trade mug! We love this blue and white stunner from Vietnam, handmade and hand painted! To round off the gift, add in a hand-carved mango wood owl trivet from India, perfect for a tea kettle.

Borrowed from an idea we saw on Pinterest, you can take a great gift like a cookbook and make it truly memorable:

photo(21)

By wrapping it in a tea towel! You can even spice up the package by adding salad servers!

photo(20)

We love gift wrapping in tea towels not only because it’s super cute, but it’s also sustainable and simple! Seriously, no cutting, taping, or trash! And it only takes 30 seconds! See below:

Also cute in a tea towel:

a nice bottle of wine! The tea towel above is handmade in Ethiopia out of Organic, Ethiopian Cotton. So soft!

This tea towel comes from an artisan group, Creative Women, that supports 65 artisans living in Ethiopia. Starting with only 5 weavers, One World Market is proud to be a part of a growing success story for the women in Ethiopia!

So whether it’s a hostess gift, a housewarming present, or just a small token of gratitude, giving a Fair Trade gift is always the way to go!

New in the Store–Fair Trade Organic Olives

green olives

One of our best selling items in the store is our Fair Trade, Organic Olive Oil from Palestine. Foodies and Newbies alike fall in love with the rich depth in flavor. It can be used in cooking or just as a simple dressing or marinade. We’re careful to never let our stock run too low!

So we were very excited yesterday when our latest shipment of olive oil came in with a NEW product from the Canaan Fair Trade line: OLIVES!

Olive orchards, which make up 80% of the farmed lands in Palestine, are nurtured as a family legacy that is passed on through generations. Orchards are grown on hand-built terraces, inaccessible by modern machinery, that hug the hillsides and prevent erosion. Farmers work year round to build and maintain these ancient terraces that were crafted by their ancestors.

This attention to detail and respect for the trees definitely shows up in the jar!

We’re so excited to have more products in the store from Canaan Fair Trade. You can read more about this cooperative group of producers here!
