International Women’s Day will be celebrated this year on Saturday, March 8th and the theme for 2014 is: Inspiring Change.
And you guessed it – We LOVE it!
This years theme truly embraces one of the aspects of Fair Trade that we love, changing the lives of those living in poverty around the world.
Plus, Fair Trade is all about empowering women! Fair Trade ensures that EVERYONE receives a Fair Wage – no matter their gender, ethnicity, or cultural background. Fair Trade provides women with a path to provide for themselves.
At One World Market, we work with so many AMAZING women everyday, like:
-Young women in Uganda getting ready to attend University (Sseko Designs)
-Women in Cambodia that are rebuilding their lives after being victims of sex trafficking (Stop Start & Malia Designs)
-Women in the Democratic Republic of Congo that are healing after sexual assault (Mamafrica)
-Women in Guatemala that provide for their entire extended families (Mayan Hands)
-Women in the Philippines that are able to get mental healthcare after suffering in the sex trafficking industry (Good Paper cards)
-Homeless Women that are provided with shelter and a job in Ghana (ABAN)
And so many more!
This Saturday, we challenge you to do one simple act to Empower Women and celebrate International Women’s Day.
You could:
1. Shop Ethically: Fair Trade products empower women and provides them with not only a fair wage, but also guaranteed health care, rights and freedom from harassment.
2. Get Social: Use the power of social media to spread awareness of the journey for women's equality.
3. Stay Informed: There are many great events that can show you ways locally and globally to make a difference.
Supporting women doesn’t have to be hard - Shopping at Fair Trade is a purchase with power!
