Fair Trade Cranberry and Chocolate Scones

What’s better than a warm cup of Fair Trade coffee in the morning? Following up that cup of coffee with a side of Zesty Cranberry and Chocolate Scones!

Perfect for a relaxing weekend breakfast or prepared ahead for a quick grab-and-go option. Make a batch and while you’re at it…bring a batch to One World Market!

You’ll need:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour (all-purpose)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 3/8 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk (preferably whole)
  • 1 cup cold butter, unsalted

For Zesty Cranberry Scones:

  • 1/2 cup dried sweetened cranberries
  • 3/4 Tablespoon orange or lemon zest

For Chocolate Scones:

  • Equal Exchange Organic Panama Extra Dark Chocolate Bar (available at One World Market)

Preheat oven to 375F degrees.

Sift dry ingredients together (in sifter or wire colander).

Beat wet ingredients separately: Cut the butter into the dry ingredients until crumbly. You should still see chunks of butter. (If you don't have a pastry cutter, just use a big fork.)

Stir in the cranberries and zest or chocolate (if splitting dough into two parts to make both cranberry and chocolate scones, do this after adding wet ingredients).

Add wet ingredients to dry just until moist. Don't overmix!

With lightly floured hands on a floured surface, shape into a circle about 1" tall. (The scones will double while baking!) Cut into wedges with a sharp knife. Use a spatula to transfer to a cookie or pizza sheet.

Bake for 20-30 minutes. Watch during the last 5-10 minutes as cooking time may vary according to your oven and also how golden brown you prefer the tops!

You can get creative with this recipe. Change the fruit, add nuts, a splash of wheat germ to the flour. Just keep the butter cold and don't overmix ñ leaving chunks of butter in the dough is what makes it flaky.

Makes 8 super-rich scones.

Another treat we’ve been enjoying here at the store are refreshing glasses of Sparkling Raspberry Iced Rooibos Tea.

It’s so simple to make, and we love the extra zest of freshness from the lime wedges. Plus Rooibos Tea is oh so good for you; it’s super high in antioxidants! Try it – we know you’ll love it too!

Easy Gifts that Keep Giving

This summer, we here at One World Market seem to be getting lots of folks looking for housewarming and hostess gifts.

We love putting together impromptu gift baskets, and thought it would be fun to feature a few of our favorites here on the blog!

Baker’s Delight: Whether it’s a gift for a home cook or a professional chef, anyone who enjoys baking would love this gift! Fair Trade Madagascar Vanilla from Madécasse, paired with cool blue napkins handmade in Bali, a utensil set hand-carved from sustainable acacia wood, all nestled inside an all purpose white-washed bamboo bowl.

Every item tells a story at One World Market, but we love the story behind our new vanilla! Not only does Madécasse support Fair Trade farmers who grow and harvest the vanilla bean, but they also produce and package their product in Madagascar! This provides 4 times the impact of traditional Fair Trade practices.

Tea Lover: The perfect gift for the tea lover in your life! Choose an Organic, Fair Trade tea and pair it with a beautiful handmade, Fair Trade mug! We love this blue and white stunner from Vietnam, handmade and hand painted! To round off the gift, add in a hand-carved mango wood owl trivet from India, perfect for a tea kettle.

Borrowed from an idea we saw on Pinterest, you can take a great gift like a cookbook and make it truly memorable:

By wrapping it in a tea towel! You can even spice up the package by adding salad servers!

We love gift wrapping in tea towels not only because it’s super cute, but it’s also sustainable and simple! Seriously, no cutting, taping, or trash! And it only takes 30 seconds! See below:

Also cute in a tea towel:

a nice bottle of wine! The tea towel above is handmade in Ethiopia out of Organic, Ethiopian Cotton. So soft!

This tea towel comes from an artisan group, Creative Women, that supports 65 artisans living in Ethiopia. Starting with only 5 weavers, One World Market is proud to be a part of a growing success story for the women in Ethiopia!

So whether it’s a hostess gift, a housewarming present, or just a small token of gratitude, giving a Fair Trade gift is always the way to go!

Promoting Social Justice and the Environment: A NEW Cup of Coffee

This week, One World Market is excited to be offering a new coffee from El Salvador: Eight Rivers.

Eight Rivers

Eight Rivers uses coffee beans from the Las Colinas Co-op. The 89 coffee farmers that make up Las Colinas co-op are situated on the border of El Imposible National Park. Their farming practices serve a very critical role in protecting and preserving the area’s important natural resources.

Ten years ago, the farmers began the rigorous process of transitioning all of their coffee to organic production and today all of it is certified organic. It is also grown under a heavy forested canopy. Keeping the forest lush is a high priority; a new sustainability program involves planting 60,000 new coffee trees each year throughout the farm. Considering that El Salvador is one of the most deforested countries in the western hemisphere, this is a great accomplishment.

Their land also contains a spring that provides water to thousands of people in the nearby town of Tacuba, and the farmers have taken great care to preserve and protect this spring that so many people depend on for clean water.

Las Colinas recently built a state-of-the-art ecological mill that recycles wastewater used during coffee processing, helping to conserve water and protect the soil and groundwater supply from contaminants.

The previous wastewater system wasn’t much of a system at all: wastewater pools that were largely unusable and were problems to manage. The current system has turned that reality on its head: the community now uses these pools filled with the recycled, clean water, as fish farms.

In visiting this coffee grower’s co-op, an Equal Exchange representative asked one of the farmers, Remberto, what the biggest difference has been in his life since the co-op was formed. He replied,

remberto

A coffee that promotes not only social justice but also responsible environmental stewardship, now that’s an amazing cup of coffee!
